Choosing the Right Table Tennis Rubbers
The rubber is the part of the racket that actually touches the ball. It determines how much spin you generate, how fast the ball bounces, and how much control you maintain. Two different rubbers on the same blade can play completely differently.
Key Characteristics
- Sponge Hardness:Softer sponges (below 45°) offer more control and forgiveness, good for beginners and all-round players. Harder sponges (47° and above) store more energy and provide more speed, but require a clean, firm stroke.
- Surface:Grippy, slightly tacky rubbers (Chinese style) generate a lot of spin even with slow strokes. Semi-grippy to smooth rubbers (European style) provide more speed and catapult effect.
- Rubber Type:Most rubbers are inverted (smooth, lots of spin and speed). For defensive playing styles, there are short pips, long pips, and anti-spin rubbers.
Sponge Thickness
Sponge thickness is usually chosen as a variant (1.8 mm to max). Thinner sponges give more control, thicker ones more speed and spin potential. 2.0 mm and max are the most common thicknesses for offensive players.
ITTF Approval
Players who play in clubs or tournaments need an ITTF-approved rubber. Look for the corresponding marking when purchasing; most of our rubbers are approved.
